I agree with M that middle school students are tough. You have to
assert yourself. You are the boss in the classroom!

I found that well structured cooperative learning lessons,
Jeopardy for review and debates worked well.

I would suggest looking at the sites of teachers like Mr. Kash and
Mr. Roughton et al. on the Social Studies Resource page on my
site to get some great ideas of different ways to present material.
