The two are just different. Look at the following.

Por -- Expresses the REASON why you do something.

Lo invité por darme dinero.

I invited him because he gave me money.

Para -- Expreses the PURPOSE for doing something. It's what you
want to get out of the situation.

Lo invité para darme dinero.

I paid him so that he'd give me money.
