First, have you tried talking to others in your department or
someone at the district level? In both districts I have
worked, there have been common Spanish finals and we were
instructed to reach a certain chapter in the textbook in a
certain amount of time. Once I learned the time frame I was
working with, I would go back and see how many weeks I would
have per unit of study (i.e., chapter). That's how I've done
it. For instance, for the last three chapters I'm teaching
this fall semester, I only have 2 weeks per chapter (instead
of the normal 2½ to 3 weeks). It's a tight squeeze, but I
have to be realistic about my teaching deadlines.
