Why is the Spanish "v" pronounced like a "b"?

Daniel Hanson First off, in Spanish there has never been a labiodental V
like in English or Latin. The reason why Spanish has both
the B and V letters in words is due to tradition, keeping
some of the spelling from Latin.

The reason why B and V sometimes sound like an American
