Re: no para this year
Posted by GailMA on 7/05/08
I've had this situation several different ways. My first year of
inclusion I had no para. Then I had one para with a caseload of
about 13 (I can't remember exactly) in a combination of pull-out and
inclusion in three different classrooms. I'm up to two paras now
but one seems to always be assigned to a classroom that has a child
who needs a 1:1 (whether his IEP says that or not). However, the
paras have always been under my direction, not the classroom
teacher's. I find it easier to have anyone assigned to a classroom
to be under the classroom teacher's direction as I don't really have
access to the para anyway (unless the child is absent or moves!).
Can you assign the paras to pull-out some students from the
classroom and work with those groups (under your direction) for the
IEP times listed? I've found the hardest thing is to keep the
schedules organized, as some classroom teachers like to change their
schedules without warning.
I know exactly what you mean about coverage for meetings, testing,
etc. Good luck! Hopefully, the classroom teachers will work well
with you. I've had a good experience, but it has taken several
years of really working to be considered part of "the team".
