Re: 1:1 Aide Survey

Our district does not assign 1:1 aides to students, but will
provide an additional aide to a self-contained classroom. If
a student requires additional adult assistance, the teacher
documents all activities that require adult assistance, and
calculates the amount of time an adult is required to be with
a student. This data is written into the IEP. Once it is
agreed that the student requires additional adult assistance,
an additional adult is assigned to the classroom. The
district will tell you right away that they do not provide
any 1:1 aides, but in a round about way, they do. When the
student leaves the classroom (promotes to another school) the
aide is reassigned to another classroom.
Our district employs floater aides to be used in an
emergency, such as when a high needs student requires
additional adult assistance, and the teacher is still
gathering data for the IEP, or when a student enrolls from
out of state, and the previous IEP states that he has a 1:1
aide.
The IEP needs to address the plan for weaning the student
from the adult assistance, when possible.
