I agree with everyone. The relationship is key.
I would add two other components to the mix. Removing bias
from language is critical. Bias can be anger, condescension,
prejudice, ego and the like. When you allow these to come out
in your words you give students ground to stand against you.
Calm and assertive is the persona that should be adopted for
the best result.
I would also add that it's critical to have good routines in
you classroom. I have a list of the 20 that I use on my
