This was very sad. It also makes me very angry. Also sad are
the number of autistic students who are dumped into dafacs
tender loving care ever year because the parents can no
longer cope. Where is the respite care and assistance for
parents who are at the end of their rope. Where are vacations
and date nights so parents can stay married. Where are the
churches and friends who could help out so the parents are
not driven to desperate acts. I have taught 19 autistic
students now whose parents gave up custody for one reason or
another. All 19 students were much loved and well cared for.
The parents (mainly single or divorced mothers ) could no
longer manage. There was no support or assistance offered by
defacs in these cases. Just a lot of paper work and
condemning stares. We should do better as a nation.
