Re: Dumped children

Although I realise from the full text of your posts that you are on the
side of the good guys, I still must object to the use of the term "dumped
children". The implication is that these parents couldn't get rid of
these kids fast enough, and while that does indeed happen, I believe it
will generally happen when these kids are very young.
With many families who must make this agonizing choice, it is less of a
question of dumping these kids off than it is being pushed to the
breaking point by the extraordinary stress of raising a child who is
often non-communicative, presenting challenging behaviors, sometimes
aggressive in their tantrums, and very often as big if not bigger than
everyone else in the household. Furthermore, although the situation is
slowly getting better, historically this meant going before a judge to
plead incapable of being a parent, which warrents an investigation by the
State and can have unnanticipated collateral damage with other children
in the household.
The people who are truly guilty of dumping these kids is of copurse
society, as you pointed out. I recall several years ago being infuriated
beyond belief that the Senate was deciding on whether or not to hold a
series of hearings about the use of steroids in MLB at the same time a
report was being issued that the implied meteoric increase in autism
prevalance was determined to be valid, and I thought WTF is wrong with
these people that they would ignore a tsunami of children with a
profoundly disabling condition, almost assuredly triggered post-natally
so they could focus on whether or not A-Rod took a short cut to beef up
his batting average.
As I said, I realise that it was not your intent to belittle the parents
of these kids, but I had to express my thoughts on the descriptor used.
