    Re: stressed about my para
    Posted by: wasub on 11/06/09

Where the school is located should have no bearing on the performance of
school staff. Paras are there to do a job and fall under the direct
supervision of the special education teacher. Parents have the right to
request that their child not participate in some activities and should be
able to trust the school staff to fulfill their reasonable request and
wishes. This child could be only recently recovering from a cold or ear
infection; this child could have tubes in their ears; the parent may not
feel comfortable with the amount of supervision during a swim activity,
etc. Regardless, the parent said no, the para was aware of the request
and flagrantly disobeyed both the sped teacher and the parent, as well as
    lied to two staff.

I agree with the previous poster who said do not call the para. You do
not owe this para an explanation or an apology, nor should you feel bad
about this situation. The para is the one who should be calling to
apologize. Definitely report these incidents to the principal. If the
parent calls and complains to the principal, he or she should have some
background knowledge and be prepared with a response and plan of action
to assure the parent that their wishes will be honored in the future.
Stand your ground OP. If you cave now, you'll be caving forever and your
students will suffer for it. wasub
