I have a 9th grade student who can't read. I teach automotive and learned of his disability when I asked him to read aloud to the class one day. He was embarrassed and so was I. My question is: If all his teachers up to this point have passed him should I pass him? I could give him grades on hands on projects and put him through that way. I am a new teacher and was stunned to meet a teenager who could not read.

Liz I'm sorry to be the turd in the punchbowl here, but most schools stop teaching reading in about the second or third grade. Even getting identified as LD does not guarantee any sort of reading instruction...you often only get an hour of resource where you spend your time scrambling to get tests and work read, other classwork finished and so on...usu...See More
