I teach nonverbal teenagers in a public high school. I struggle with the lack of parent communication. We usually find out what's changed or going on through the bus drivers! I would like to be more proactive and send home a letter at the beginning of the year explaining the importance of communication from home. I am missing important information like medication changes, lack of sleep, and big changes at home. Has anyone ever sent out a letter like that or know of one that I can creatively "borrow"? Thanks!
LH I have seen where teachers and parents have sent "communication notebooks" back and forth to each other via the children's backpacks. If you're concerned that the teenagers won't give them to you, perhaps the parents can give the notebook to the bus driver and then s/he can give the notbook to the teacher who meets the bus at the school e...See More

Susan Van I too have used communication notebooks, although they do not always get returned each day. It is a helpful way to communicate back and forth.

KT Have you tried email or direct text to the parents phone? That works for me.
