Making deals with students is not effective teaching. It teaches students that when they grow up, everything will be negotiable, and they will take no responsibility for their actions or work. (You may find some of the examples in the article silly and funny, but they are all actual "deals" that have been observed in classrooms.)

So, what works better than making deals with students?
