Re: to stomack lady
Posted by been there on 5/05/08

I feel for you. Some teachers don't have the skills to take on
a student teacher. I too tried to become a teacher after having
been in private industry. The school culture can seem foreign
when one is used to working with adults. The expectations are so
different. For example, I think it's expected that a boss will
tell you directly what she expects and will correct you clearly
when you do something wrong. My CT never told me what time she
expected me to arrive in the morning and then she complained to
my supervisor about my coming in late. She never told me I was
coming in too late, not even once. All it would have taken was
direct and clear instructions on her part. She also complained
that I failded to attend an after hours meeting however, she
didn't tell me about the meeting until the day of the meeting
and it was the same day as my ST seminar at my university 45
minutes away (and she knew that.)

Failure to properly communicate expectations and failure to
point out problems to the ST directly seems to be a common
problem with ST placements and I think all prospective CTs
should be trained in how to manage adults effectively. I also
think the CT should be paid well by the universeity and
evaluated for her performance as a CT. Both parties should be
held accountable for a successful learning experience.
Moreover, just as the teacher takes and oath not to betray
confindences regarding one of her minor students; the teacher
should likewise sign an agreement not to betray confidences
    regarding her adult students.

Regarding the poster who insulted you, ignore those comments.
Unfortunately, on an open forum like this there will be people
    who post insensitive remarks.
