Re: Failing Student Teaching

Very few people actually fail student teaching. There are
some things to remember though as a student teacher. These
are issues that I see on this board.
1. Remember you are a guest in the school and in the
teacher's room.
2. Don't criticize her teaching style or the methods she uses
to teach any subject.
3. Remember that the district and/or the state may have
specific guidelines for what she teaches. (For example, Texas
has TEKS (state mandated curriculum for every subject from
preK through grade 12; and TAKS the state mandated assessment
that kids are expected to pass.)
4. Be able to take contructive criticism without having your
feelings hurt.
5. If there is a problem with the teacher, go to your
university supervisor. Only he can make changes in
placement. I have seen this done in Texas,
6. Dress professionally even if the teachers in the school
are dressed very casually. We interviewed in suits, dresses,
etc. We have the job so we may wear nice walking shorts to
work in or jeans and a T-shirt. Student teachers and subs
just cannot dress that casually. I have student taught,
subbed and now teach fulltime.
7. Avoid the teacher's lounge unless it is lunch. Don't
gossip about students are teachers. Don't talk about politics.
8. Before making any changes to the class routine, ask you
cooperating teacher first.
9. Where I teach, we encourage our student teachers to join
either the student association of Classroom Teachers or Texas
State Teachers Assn. because of liability insurance. Anytime
you are in a classroom, you need to have liability insurance.
