Re: Getting a student teacher

My best advice is be her friend. I just finished my teaching
program and we had to student teach twice at two different
grade levels. The first teacher I was with was awesome! We
got to be really close. She treated me as a colleague, not
as someone to boss around. She always asked me what I did
over the weekend and was interested in my personal life. She
invited me to all the the teacher's parties which helped me
feel part of the school community, she often took me out to
lunch and I even ended up spending Christmas with her
family! This might sound like it doesn't matter that much,
but I felt so much more comfortable taking over her room
when I knew that she would always be supportive of me. Also,
if she was going to be absent she always called my cell
phone in the morning (they tell student teachers to do that,
but mentor teachers should do the same to be polite). I
think the kids could tell that we were close and it made
them see me more as a teacher and respect my authority. My
second student placement was the absolute opposite. I
suspect the teacher only wanted a free baby-sitter to watch
the kids while she sat in the teacher's lounge. She really
didn't seem interested in me as a person. She would
criticize me and then do the same thing herself that she had
told me not to do. She was always bossing me around and
acting like I worked for her rather than treating me like a
colleague. I would get so anxious to please her that I did
not teach as well. Also, I don't think the children saw me
as a teacher because she would boss me around in front of
them. This led to a lot of behavior problems. And, she
missed alot of days of school! I'm sure your student
teacher's university will give you basic tips like sharing
lesson plans. But, I think that the best thing you can do is
be your student teacher's friend and support her. She will
already have a lot people such as professors and supervisors
telling her what to do. You can just be there for her and
you will both benefit. My first teacher and I are still
close friends and we do things together all the time, so who
knows, you might end up with a life long friend!
