Re: Getting a student teacher

I did my student teaching this past fall, and here are some
things that my co-op teacher did that really helped me:
-She let me come in about 2 weeks before school started so
we could meet, chat, and just get to know each other a
little bit.
-We did a lot of team-teaching in the beginning (the first
week) to help get my feet wet
-She introduced me to our grade-level team, and invited me
to participate in their meetings, lunches out, etc so I
would feel included/welcome
-She introduced me from the get-go as a teacher, not a
STUDENT teacher, which made me feel more respected by her
(everyone already knew I was a student teacher, so why use
the title?)
-She was really open to hearing all of my ideas, and she let
me try pretty much whatever I wanted (I think too often it's
easy to just say: "This is how I do it" and expect the ST to
model you...that's how my 2nd ST placement was....)
It is important to make an effort to get to know your ST,
but at the same time, remember you are there to help her,
and you are still technically someone who supervises her. I
had other STers in my cohort who still acted like college
students instead of teachers (out drinking on thursdays and
spending friday hungover, or getting 'too close' to
students, etc). If you feel like you need to step in, then
don't be afraid to do it!
