Re: Getting a student teacher

I can already tell that you are a great teacher! The fact
that you seek advice from former/current student teachers of
how best to help your new student teacher speaks volumes!
Here are some positives I remember from my student teaching
days:
Keep a journal (one of those composition books) with your
student teacher. Start off with a positive (I am so glad you
are here, I can't wait to work with you) message. Tell your
student teacher to write any questions she/he has about the
classroom in this book. Write back with the answers. You can
also use this book for observations during 'her/his' lessons.
This will be a great resource the teacher can look back on for
years to come.
Also, please remember that as confident as your student
teacher may be, we are all seeking approval. Lead off your
discussions with him/her with a positive, and then ease into
what needs to improve.
For instance..."You did such a great job motivating the
students during that lesson by......."
"Next time, you might want to....."
Perhaps most importantly, remember that you were once a new
teacher. Think about what you would have appreciated most
during that time.
