I'm sorry that happened.
Don't assume it's you. I think it's odd that they gave you a
hiring letter and you signed a contract and they still were able
to NOT hire you ... you could probably even sue them for breach
of contract (I wouldn't of course) but the "change of direction"
makes no sense, unless they had budget cuts, had to change the
format of a department, number of classes they plan to create in
the grade level, etc. It certainly would be unethical, for
example, if the "change in direction" were to hire someone's
daughter or someone cheaper or someone who had an extra degree.

You should call and ask again, if only for your peace of mind,
since you are concerned there is something about YOU, and not
just a budget freeze or lack of need for thar particular position.
