One of two things has happened: either something came up that
made them decide not to fill this position ( and it does
happen) or something in your references didn't check out. If
it is the first, they should have reassured you that that was
the reason. Shame on them if they didn't. The good news is
that they will probably feel obligated to offer you the next
    position.

If it was the second, I would ask if this was the case and
try to check back and see which one failed to give you a good
reference. I am assuming that you did check with everyone
before you used them as a reference, correct? There was a
student teacher a number of years ago who student taught in my
building ( rather unsuccessfully), but not with me. I was
stunned when I discovered she had used me as a reference. I
could not comment either way on her abilities, as I had never
seen her teach. Never use anyone as a reference without their
permission. I am also assuming that everything you said in
your application/interview is accurate. They do check.

One way to find out is to ask someone you know in the system
if they filled the position with someone else.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It really is a devastating
thing to happen. Best of luck finding something else.
