Call your union rep. Honestly, "going a different direction"
is not an acceptable answer AFTER a signed formal letter.
Unless they cut the position, then they can't go a different
direction on a whim. You might have a case, if you want to
pursue it with a lawyer.
A kindergarten teacher in my school had this happen, she
marched into the superintendent's office and said she is
calling a lawyer (a union rep advised her), and they gave her
the job. The real reason they wanted to un-hire her is because
some one cheaper had come along. She kept the job.
