Hi Jamie,
I am a student teacher who is working with cross-categorical
students. I am definitely a person who gets very nervous when
I am supposed to provide direct instruction, especially when I
am not familiar with the material.
As a student teacher, I have to say that there are times when I
definitely lack assertiveness with the students. I am not firm
enough, in other words. That is something I really need to
work on (being firm and consistent).
I think for someone who is starting out like you and myself, it
is normal to lack assertiveness. People think I am too
loosey-goosey sometimes; but the truth is, there is a fine line
between being a little assertive and being a control-frea (at
least that's the way I see it).
Anyway, hang in there, and don't get discouraged. I think for
some new teachers, especially those who are working under
another professional, the power dynamic is also something that
may affect your assertiveness.
