There is absolutely nothing wrong with subbing. It's a great
way to try out different grade levels and subject areas and
to meet other teachers and try out different schools. In our
district, which is small, it's also a way to get a foot in
the door ... especially if you're a hometown former student
... the trick is to be sure you look for a full-time job from
day 1, so you don't get stuck in the rut of only subbing.
Good luck!
I'm a paraprofessional (former business person) and started
subbing as a teacher K-12, all subjects, then filled in for
paras, one-to-one's, TA's, and finally did a long-term sub
assignment for a para ... and now have been working f/t as a
para for 5 years. I never intended to go back for a teaching
certification after already having a full 27 year corporate
career, and this suits me fine ... but I've known other f/t
moms who started as lunch monitors, then paras, and then went
on to get their teaching degrees and are doing just fine.
And I have several friends who started by subbing as teachers
WITH their new licenses and now have full-time jobs. So, go
for it
