I can't really excuse or explain their rude and bizarre behavior so
I won't try. Teaching does attract all kinds of people and many of
them feel like teaching (especially in THEIR class or THEIR school)
is some kind of exclusive club. I had a similar experience when I
started as a TA while getting my temp. teaching certificate. My
classroom teacher was extremely suspicious, defensive and generally
non-supportive. Other TAs and the teacher next door kept telling
what a great teacher I would make. I got the opportunity at a much
better school and have never looked back.
That being said, some teachers just to not do well with other people
in their class. When I needed to do a 15 hour practicum at my last
school, I asked another SPED teacher for a favor and before I could
even get the words out, he said, "Don't say you need to do the O
word" (observation). He was absolutely uncomfortable with anyone
observing or being in the class when he was teaching. He at least
had the decency to feel bad about it.
