but we are going against a practice being taught to new
teachers. It says that children need to talk to learn, that a
busy classroom is a productive classroom and that teachers now
should have microphones so that children can hear them when they
are teaching. Now I have been in classrooms where the children
were talking but at a very subdued level and they were on track
and making progress. And I have been in classrooms where the
noise level was well above what I am comfortable with and the
children were also on task and learning. However I have been in
far too many classrooms where the noise level is disruptive to
any kind of learning, the children are talking but not on task
and the teacher appears to be oblivious. When a student, I
needed relative calm and peace to learn and I wonder how many
bright children are actually being damaged by this approach.
Personally I think there should be a balance but that the
children should always be able to hear the teacher.
