You gave great advice to Eric! Anyone else who is in the same
position can also follow the advice given.
I think that leaving information off a resume and leaving
information off a job application are two different things. I
have left information off a resume (both positive and negative
information) as I just didn't have space. I've been told by
many people who hire that they don't look at resumes that are
more than two pages long. Most bosses want one page, so that
they can scan the information quickly. I resume is brief and to
the point, listing the names of schools that I have taught at,
the person who was principal at the time, my duties and my
references. Information such as hobbies, etc., are a space
filler and not applicable to the job I might be applying for.
Now, when applying for a specific job, I would only go back x
amount of years. If the negative job experience happened a year
or so after that time span, I wouldn't list it. Case in point;
I do have a *negative* teaching experience that I do not list on
my resume anymore. I used to, when I didn't have many years of
teaching experience. Even when I did list it, I never listed
the principal as a reference contact; instead I had references
that were teachers, school councelors, principals and assistant
principals from other schools. That worked fine for me.
rbz also mentioned contacting the superintendent who gave you a
good recommendation. Those who hire are apt to take the
recommendation of the superintendent seriously. If you have
that person in your corner, you stand an excellent chance of
getting an interview and/or job. My superintendent doesn't even
know who I am, my district is that big. I have met my
superintendant once or twice, but am not on a first name basis.
I'm just a little cog in the big wheel of my district.
Eric, if teaching is your passion, don't let *anyone* change
your mind for you. You are the only person who knows what *you*
want and need. We need good teachers such as yourself, in the
trenches.
Many people have given you good advice in this thread. Take
what you want, or don't take any of it at all. You are the only
person who know what is in your heart.
I wish you all the best.
