Well...I started working with networks in 1986. I did the
best thing I think anyone could do, built a network at home
and piddled around on it. It would not be as expensive as you
may think. Get you a used Mac for your server, and a couple
of used machines for your nodes. Try to get at least one
older machine where you can be sure to have issues when it
comes to installing the software...you need to troubleshoot.
The best way to learn networking is via hands on and grab you
some good books on the topic. You may also want to consider
setting up a Linux network...the sofware is free, it is very
similar to the Mac OS at the command level, and Linux boxes
do not need much overhead to be effective. You could get you
some Pentium III's as your nodes if need be. A couple of
things to master are: file management, and using the various
administrative tools...like creating menus, users, etc. You
will only learn troubleshooting by actually doing it. Check
out O'Reily Press, http://oreilly.com/ they always have good
