I have a rubric for a project. There are nine elements on the rubric and kids could earn a 4, 3, 2, 1, for each element.

For the final grade, do I give the points earned and divide by 36 i.e. 35/36=97%.

Or do I add all the 4s, 3s,....and take the average of that? i.e. the student would receive a final grade of 4, 3, 2, 1.

This happens to be for a social studies project, but in general, which method of scoring do you use when using a rubric in any subject area?
