moving to 3rd grade

I'm most likely moving to 3rd grade next year. The principal is giving us money to buy class set of books, especially for lower readers. Can you suggest some good low 3rd grade level books that would be good for me to use to teach reading and comprehension skills with? Are the Ramona books low third grade level?

You're going to LOVE third grade. I taught several grades and third was my favorite. The kids were old enough to have terrific personalities and a sense of humor, yet young enough to love school.

Favorite books:

1. Junie B. Jones - I know some teachers don't like Junie B because she's not the best model for perfect grammar. However, my students LOVED these books. It's one of the few series that can get kids to actually laugh out loud. And they're right at a third grade independent reading level.

2. Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing - An excellent read for the end of third grade, right before the kids advance to 4th.

3. Magic Treehouse - These books are time-tested favorites. It's an easy-to-read series. Best for the beginning of the year, or for your struggling readers.

4. Geronimo Stilton - Kids love these books because of the colorful pictures and fun characters. They're chapter books with lots of illustrations.

5. Freckle Juice - It's a very short chapter book by Judy Blume, but right on grade level. Kids loved it.

6. Bunnicula - It's about a vegetarian vampire bunny. Perfect read for October.

7. Stone Fox - If you're into sad books. Think of it as Old Yeller, but written at a 3rd grade level.

8. Cam Jansen - Great Mystery series that's perfect for this grade level. For your struggling readers, there's also Young Cam Jansen.

Steve Thank youfor your response. I had to place the order yesterday but I did choose one Junie B Jones book, and one magic tree house book, and one Cam Jansen book. I had a Geronimo Stilton book on teh list but had to put it back ($500 only goes so far when you are buying 10 - 20 copies of one book). Tales of a 4th grade Nothing sounds good. I wish I had chosen it. I got copies of Farmer Boy by Laura Wilder, Socks by Beverly Cleary, a Horrible Harry book, and a whole class set of In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. I checked - our library already had a set of Freckle Juice.
