Re: Teaching with Smart Centers
Posted by MrsD on 6/09/06

I used Smart Centers last year and it worked really well.I
modified them a bit for the younger kids as follows:

Read - Just one book to start. I added a few more once they
were ready to handle the reading.

Write - At the beginning of the year I used half and half
paper. The writing prompts I used were really easy to answer
and the kids could draw a picture above their answer. By the
end they could answer higher level prompts.

Activity - This was some sort of phonics activity like magnet
letters to form words in the story. They really liked matching
type phonics games or three letter word puzzles. I also had
science activites when I used science non-fiction texts. I
think their favorite center had them checking the room with
magnets to see what items were magnetic.

Game - I used file folder type games, concentration games, go
fish type games etc. using the theme of the story. For
example, we recently read 'Feathers for Lunch' so I used an
old maid style game with different types of birds and a cat
    for the old maid.

Challenge - Yes, I used challenge, but my challenges were
simply extention activities. If a book used a lot of color
words I'd ask the kids to come up with fun names for colors as
if they were coming up for a new Crayola color name. A few
times I've had them write letters to the author to say what
they liked about the book or how they might have changed the
    ending.

The Smart Centers work so much better than traditional
centers. Good luck using them in your classroom!
