For the second time in 20 years, travel agent Joseph Maloof is awaiting sentencing for
defrauding customers who came to him for group tours of Europe, South America and other locales.

Maloof and his business partner, Norman "Ron" Hansen, who together ran a Campbell travel agency,
pleaded guilty Tuesday to 13 felony counts each as they admitted defrauding their customers of
more than $1 million, prosecutors said.

Hansen faces 28 years in prison; Maloof's maximum sentence could be 14 years.

Attorneys for Maloof and Hansen could not be reached for comment.

According to court documents, Hansen had taken over Maloof's company in recent years. In
February, Maloof's attorney Michael Armstrong had said that the missing money was Hansen's
responsibility.

Prosecutors alleged in court documents that Maloof and Hansen took money from at least eight
tour groups, but canceled the planned trips weeks or days before the departure without refunding
the cash.

Maloof is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

In 1989, he was sentenced to six months probation after he pleaded no contest to charges he
violated state consumer protection laws by defrauding customers of his travel agency.

However, he petitioned to have his convictions expunged in 1998 and opened a new travel agency,
JM Travel Selections.>>
