    There are actually quite a few US-based educational companies who
    specialize in the type of tour you were looking for.

    Having been to Costa Rica on quite a few occasions, I would NOT
    recommend traveling without any tour guide ...no matter how good
    your knowledge is of any given destination. Was your trip approved
    by your Board of Education or did you handle everything outside of
    school? God forbid something terrible should happen and you're stuck
    having to resolve the problem by yourself.

    A big issue I had once while dealing directly with company in Costa
    Rica was liability insurance...they just didn't have any which posed
    a great risk.
