Hi!
The students in my class are treated to a veritable laboratory
of creatures each day! We have: 2 land turtles, 1 gecko, a
Chilean Rose Tarantula, and 15 hissing cockroaches!
The turtles are by far the easiest to care for! They are quiet,
can be left alone on weekends, and require little space or
clean-up. I did check with a vet about our states laws in
adopting turtles, as there are certain breeds that should not
be sold in pet stores.
We wash hands before and after handling the turtles, -and
primarily only our "pet helpers" (Kindergarten age) give them a
bath on Friday's (with a toothbrush), by scrubbing their shells
and feet. This is to prevent fungus from settling into their
shell. Also, I have sign up sheet and a small traveling tank,in
which the turtles can be checked out by a family for the
weekend. I've done this for 6 years and never had a problem.
Good luck!
