That is, if there are hummers in your area and you have a window.
Caring for the feeder is as easy as swishing it with bleach
every week or two (RINSE METICULOUSLY!), putting in more sugar
water (1 part sugar, 5 parts water), and hanging it back up.
Hummingbirds are gorgeous, of course, and your students will
love watching them. Pay a little extra for the feeders with
the rings around the bottom so they can perch while they feed;
they'll hang around much longer than if they can stop and rest
instead of just hovering. The feeders are much less trouble
than the seed/suet restaurants for larger (and poopier) birds.
Less expensive, no shells all over the ground, no rodents, and
no splatting on the car windows of infuriated co-workers!
Also, in some regions this is GREAT time of year to put out
hummingbird feeders, simply because a lot of people bring their
feeders in for the winter. That's bad, bad news for any lot of
hummers who get acclimated to the feeders in the spring and
summer and decide it's safe to nest in the area. If there are
hummingbirds where you live right now, they WILL find your feeder!
