Re: Responses for silent reading
Posted by Julie on 6/25/08
I recently read an article in The Reading Teacher titled R5: The Sustained Silent Reading makeover. . . from the Oct. 2006 magazine. It discusses how a classroom teacher and a university instructor "made over" the SSR time in the classroom so that students could be held accountable for the reading they were supposed to do. If you don't have access to the magazine they published a book that goes into greater detail about the process. You can do a search for R5 In Your Classroom. Two of the elements include partnering up two students who share an "i wonder. . ." or "Wow" moment from the book. Their partner then shares that observation with the class. The bottom line is that this process holds the reader accountable for the reading time because they know that they will need to have a response to share with a peer. Maybe someone else out there has tried this and can explain the process in a clearer way. Good luck! Julie
