Good move not striking. Caught between needing a job and being out
of a job. We never struck Grant District but were close many times.
I think all of those informational picket lines worked. Picketing
board meetings really worked too. Also a really good teacher's
husband was a Federal Circuit Judge. When she wrote a letter to the
Sacramento Bee about our miserable working conditions and short
pay, the comments were always published! That really helped our
cause. I am not really a hard core union guy, but was site rep and
crisis rep for 17 years. My job was to get out the information and
show of force to prevent a strike. Preventing is always better than
striking. I would advise all new teachers to lay low and not draw
attention as they could be let go. Others from CTA said they would
gain protection and could prove retaliation by the district if they
walked information picket line. Some did some did not. Some young
teachers were so bold. Our district would lay off 90 teachers and
end up hiring everyone back in August. You "got" kids you have to
have teachers to teach. So you lay them off then what are you going
to do? And laid off teachers can claim unemployment. This happened
many years in a row.
As an elective teacher I was always on the bubble. As a counselor
also on the bubble. But when I became the school counselor I ended
the site rep work as there were so many fires to put out on a daily
basis. Lots of problem solving.
Anyway glad you did not have to strike. What a difficult position
to be in. Life is better now. Time to go mow the lawn!
