Re: In School Suspension Programs
Posted by idea on 12/22/06

I have an ideas pertaining ISS:

In all the schools in which I worked, the teacher was "punished"
more than the student when the student was sent to ISS. Since the
student had to miss the teacher's class in order to be in ISS, the
teacher had to write up the lesson and send down all the necessary
work, instructions, materials, etc. This is an additional burden on
the teacher. Then the teacher has the responsibility of catching up
the student when he/she returns, so that he/she is not behind in the
course. Oftentimes students who misbehave are also behind
academically so this is a vicious circle of headaches.

    This is my proposal:

A student who misbehaves should not be given detention during class
time. This detention should be set on Saturday, which is really
more punishment for the student. A different teacher could
volunteer to run Saturday school every week and receive a stipend of
so much per hour. How would this be funded, you ask? By the
parents or guardian of the child who misbehaved. Because they are
not training/disciplining their child properly and he/she is causing
disruption of instruction paid for by tax-payer dollars, there
should be a financial penalty. This would be an incentive for more
disciplinary intervention on the part of the parents.
