Re: Discipline Chart for Classroom Management
Posted by Amy on 3/26/08

I teach 12th grade English at a suburban high school that
uses corporal punishment. When I started several years
ago, I was skeptical about paddling and did not use it in my
class. I had some discipline problems, including many
    tardies.

Last year I went to a discipline system for tardies that
    applies equally to all students:

    1st tardy = warning

2nd tarding = choice of paddling (2 swats) or 2 hours
    detention

3rd tardy = choice of paddling (3 swats) or 3 hours detention

4th tardy = choice of paddling (5 swats) or ISS

5th tardy = trip to office

This has worked surprisingly well. Tardies are down by over
half. Somewhat surpisingly, most all students choose the
swats. We paddle the students in the hall outside the
class. I paddle the girls as our district suggests a female
teacher administer corporal punishment to female students
and a male coach down the hall paddles the boys. Usually
about 5-10 paddlings are requried per week. I have noticed
that virtually no students are tardy the day after a
    paddling occurs!

I am not sure why this works so well, but it certainly
does. Many students get swats at some point during the
year, but rarely is it necessary more than once for the same
    student, especially girls.
