I have picked up some phrases and I am able to understand most of my parents (if they speak slow enough). Our school has an 85% ELL population and we very often get students in our classes that speak no English. Many of the students are bilingual and are able to translate. I use a lot of SEI strategies (realia, pictures, charades, partnering, etc) in my classroom all day long. We have a translator who works in our office and is available for translating report card comments and letters home (all information at our school goes home in both languages). As far as hiring, we have no preference one way or another. You will be required to take SEI (Sheltered English Instruction) classes in order to best serve your students.
