It is the schools who decide the professional development of the
teachers. Teachers, number one, need to be taught more of the
realities of the profession in their own education programs as they're
studying to BE a teacher. It is ridiculous that so much of "teacher
college" is SO theoretical! And, I'm sorry, but 2-3 months of student
teaching is NOT going to give them a lifelong lesson in the realities
of the profession.
There are many VERY competent teachers (yes, including myself, and
yes, in Arizona) who want to teach well, but because all of the
nonsensical decisions that administrators make, it puts us in a
position of swimming upstream. I am also sick of professional
development trainings that I have already gone through, and for some
reason, even THOSE seem more theoretical than practical, which is what
I am always wanting to be trained in...the practical. I want more best
practices to implement.
It IS also much of the schools' fault because they bring in too many
GUESTS to do plays or musicals or speeches for kids, or whatever else,
to break up instructional time. Those extras should be done either
during specials, before or after school, or some other time so we can
have more than 20 minutes to teach.
