I would appreciate anyone's input about the demand for
high school English teachers (although I know the current
state of districts and teaching positions) and what the
principals are wanting and willing to look at as far as
candidates go.
I just got Secondary 7-12 certified a couple of weeks ago,
and I have been K-8 certified for the past 5-6 years,
mostly teaching middle school in those years (Literature,
Math, and Science). Currently, I am an instructor in a non-
traditional academic program working with youth ages 16-
24. I came to this job because I realized high school age
is what I work best with and enjoy, and not having been
secondary certified, this is the only way I have been able
to get that experience.
Now that I am finally secondary certified to teach high
school English, I am wondering what the outlook is for
English teachers. I know I would do a good job at teaching
it, I have experience teaching Reading mostly, but also
Writing. I am a competent teacher, care about what I do,
and work to do the right thing.
Would principals out there give me the time of day with my
background? I did have an interview at my old high school,
but I wasn't hired because they needed someone to start in
two days and of course she (the principal) needed someone
with HS Eng experience since it was such a hasty move. She
told me I did really quite well (which was encouraging
since it was my first high school interview), and that if
it was the summer time it would be a different story
because then I would have time to prepare and plan.
Any input? Sorry it's so long. Had to give you some
background.
