Those 3 districts are among the most sought after districts in
the greater Hartford area, indeed they rival some of the rich
Fairfield County towns for the most sought after in CT.
In a "normal" economy, Simsbury sometimes has openings because
they pay very low for a "rich" school district. They are a
strange district in my view. Look at this site
http://simsbury.ccsct.com/page.cfm?p=337. If you click on the
web link for salary schedule (which is a Word doc), you'll see
that a beginning teacher (which I know you're not) can in theory
get under $40K. Even inner-city urban districts do better than
this. I have looked at the salary schedules of virtually every
district that posts one and I think New Haven (a troubled urban
district) is the only other one that pays so low.
Then on that same link, click on the "Permanent Substitute
Teacher" link, also found at http://simsbury.ccsct.com/page.cfm?
p=231. I have never seen this kind of program on any other
district's web site, in CT or elsewhere, sounds like a ploy to
get some teachers at $17,000/year (do the math, it's $100/day for
170 days).
I don't know about the other two towns you mention, but if
Simsbury is the district Math Teacher was talking about, I can
understand why they didn't interview him despite all the subbing,
they seem like a very strange district.
I've also heard that CT is a very difficult state to transfer a
certificate too (though fairly easy to get an initial
certificate). Maybe look at towns in nearby Mass. as someone
suggested, perhaps it will be better and easier. Either way,
good luck!
