    Dear Educator:

I would like to invite you and your classes to be a part
of Theater J’s exciting 2009-2010 season. Located in NW
Washington in DC Jewish Community Center, Theater J has
emerged as one of the most distinctive, progressive and
respected Jewish theaters on the national and
    international scene.

This season which includes - a coming of age classic by
Neil Simon, the story of one woman’s chronicle of the
genocide in Sudan and a hit Israeli play examining the
evolving position of women in Israeli society - provides
a great opportunity to augment your curriculum with
something educational and entertaining. We know that when
you are planning a trip you want to make sure that your
students learn while being entertained. We also know your
time is valuable and you want easy transactions and an
experience that goes beyond watching a show. Working
together, we can create a unique theater-going event for
    your students.

We provide everything you need to make our productions
part of your classroom. From study guides to in-class
discussions, we can help supply the context before and
after your visit. In addition, we can tailor further
programs to suit your classroom needs.

We hope that you will put one or more of our programs into
your yearly planning. Student group tickets (35 and under)
are always 50% off the regular price!

Be sure to look through all of the shows listed at the
bottom of this email to discover more about our great
season and about how we can make sure that your trip to
Theater J is your class’s favorite event of the year!

I look forward to speaking with you,
    Becky

    ZERO HOUR
Written & Performed by Jim Brochu
    Directed by Piper Laurie
    August 29–September 27
Channeling Zero Mostel’s wild moods, crazy humor and
righteous anger, James Brochu reintroduces us to this
funny, fantastically contrary man whose penchant for truth-
telling has been sorely missed. Will Mostel overcome his
bitterness about being blacklisted and go back to work
with the legendary director who named names before
    Congress?

    LOST IN YONKERS
    By Neil Simon
    Directed by Jerry Whiddon
    October 21–November 29
In a remarkable coming-of-age story that won 4 Tony Awards
and a Pulitzer Prize, two brothers are left to fend for
themselves in a dysfunctional household with their

    is simultaneously comic and poignant.

thrilled for his newfound success...or is he? This
poignant play explores the nature of friendship, memory
and what happens when your dreams come true—for your best
    friend.

    Times

    Voice of the Woman
Inside the secretive world of the ritual bath, eight
women’s stories unfold in this sensitive depiction of
religious observance and evolving feminist consciousness.
A knowledgeable examination of traditions and ritual, this
hit Israeli play explores the ever evolving position of
women in Israeli society. (Note: this play contains
nudity.) This show is part of VOICES FROM A CHANGING
MIDDLE EAST: VOICE OF THE WOMAN, which will feature
readings of plays by female Israeli and Arab authors.

    CONGREGATION: AMSTERDAM, JULY 27, 1656
    By David Ives
    Directed by Jeremy Skidmore
    June 26–July 25
In this witty theological drama, philosopher and accused
apostate Baruch de Spinoza faces excommunication from the
Jewish community. “Mr. Ives’s humor has always mixed the
cerebral with the silly... his daring leap into
metaphysics is… an engrossing primer on Spinoza’s radical
thinking.” – The New York Times Featuring Alexander
    Strain.

    Special Events:
    MOMMY QUEEREST
Written & Performed by Judy Gold
    December 16–January 3

Written & Performed by Josh Kornbluth
    Directed by David Dower
    March 6–March 21
DC favorite Josh Kornbluth considers the pop-art enigma
who was commissioned to paint ten Jewish notables like
Einstein, Gershwin, and Golda. In wrestling with Warhol’s
motives and style, Kornbluth uncovers his religious
identity and the spiritual dimensions of Warhol’s art.

    IN DARFUR
    By Winter Miller
March 31–April 18 *Part of Voices from a Changing Middle
    East: 2010 Festival
Based on true events, this impeccably researched chronicle
of unfolding genocide in Sudan is a searing story of
humanitarian urgency and compromised journalistic ethics.
Can one woman’s story stand for the plight of a nation?
And what are the costs of mobilizing world opinion?
