In 2001 I was hired as a teacher at Salinas Valley State Prison...a level 4
prison of 4000 men, most under 30 and there serving 10 years to forever. Just
imagine the kind of crimes they committed. Yet I had no behavior problems.
The nearest guard was not within eye sight I had hispanic, black and a few
white males. Teaching these killers was easier than working in a high school
or middle school. Each inmate knew that if they acted out they were going
back to their cell....no question. There is clearly a culture in prison and it
was that teachers were hands off.
