Don't bother taking the reading exam: you can't teach reading in FL
unless you have the endorsement or masters. The other subject areas Tampa
Teacher mentioned could be helpful.
If teaching is all you want, I agree with other posters who say
charters/prision teaching are your only options right now. However,
Speech Pathology is huge, even in this market. You could go to USF for
the 7 or so undergrad classes, then get a masters in it. (I was nearly
laid off so I started researching other career options.) It's not
teaching, but it is a job in the school system, working with children.
I don't know what makes you think FL's market for teachers is better than
NY. I have a family member who teaches in LI who said they get over 100
applications for every elementary job, and it's the same here in FL these
days. I talked to a principal who had 200+ applications for one second
grade job: that job was in FL, not NY.
