I have always thought it a little unreasonable to have a 17/18 year old
decide on a course of study that they want to do for the rest of their
lives. Nevertheless, that's the way its done in the U.S.A.

My husband is a very successful air conditioning contractor and he
learned his trade at vocational school. One of his biggest beefs about
employees is A. they don't know how to work and B.they're not trained
    properly.

A previous poster said that no one asks the teachers (which is true)
but also how about asking the students? Many people prefer working with
their hands, repairing or building stuff. Why can't we let them choose a
    trade?

for the poster who commented about roofers: I've helped reroof my house
and it's an extremely difficult and laborious job. They desever every
penny they earn and then some!
