Post: Hall County to layoff 35 high school teachers

Hall county is moving to a modified block schedule next
year, which will result in layoffs of 5 or 6 teachers at
each high school (35 total). We will have 3 days of 7
period days and 2 days of 4 period days.

The Superindendent says this will save us $3 million a
year, and that he is also expecting to make more cuts for
next year when the state hands down more budget cuts.

The reporter made gross errors in covering this story. The
article states that our high school teachers have 90
minutes of planning a day, which is "25% of their workday."
Not true! That would mean that teachers only work 6 hour
days. High school hours are 8:30 - 3:30, with teachers
reporting before that and staying after.

There was also no mention of how the layoffs will happen.
Could teachers be re-assigned to the middle or elem schools
if they have that certification? How about seniority? How
will this affect teachers that aren't at the high school
level? Could some of these teachers be bumped out?

This is another example of the attack on teachers that we
are seeing these days. Painting a picture that teachers
have plenty of planning time and only work 6 hours a day.
Of course, everyone thinks this is great because it saves
the taxpayer money. So now teachers here have to live in
fear of losing their jobs once again! (100 down, 35 to go,
and 75 being paid by stimulus funds that run out next year)
That totals 210 classroom teachers who could lose their
jobs while our enrollment continues to grow!
