    Joanne,
Aloha, I would like to first comment and tell you that no matter
where you go prejudice attitudes will always exist. The word haole
originally was not used as a derogatory term, It means foreigner in
Hawaiian. in fact many islanders including myself include the word
when describing my children with diverse ethnic backgrounds. The
term is just deemed negative by those who use it with negative
intentions. As for your children being the minority , it is true when
concerning certain public schools. I would also like to comment that
there is a high enrollment of caucasions in particular schools,
Private, as well as schools in the more affluent areas. also in areas
that containan millitary bases. I would say that this is a legitimate
concern and this can be addressed by investigating the different
schools on the islands. You may hear many horror stories, but I
really believe that Hawaii is still a place where Aloha resides. I
believe this because I fell in love with a Haole man and married him.
