Re: Haoles
Posted by AngelaS on 3/22/04

This thread interests me as a haole teacher who is planning to
move to Hawaii in the near future. The same warnings about
whites being picked are constantly given to me about teaching
in the schools that I do currently (majority African American),
even after 5 years. I would never let something like ignorant
racists stop me from living or working where I want to.

I am confident that I will not have a lot of problems in Hawaii
because I am respectful of the local culture and my goal is not
to make my lifestyle there mirror my lifestyle here. I believe
that once the locals are convinced that a person is committed
to the community and is not one of the many who show up for a
while, then leave because it's too hard, things will be fine.
Maybe I am being naive, but there are racial problems
everywhere- why would Hawaii be an exception? The state being
a "paradise" is a tourist motto, after all. :-)
