Re: "haole" in Hawaii
Posted by I'm glad you brought this post to the top. It's very ironic on 3/31/06

because I've just been reading the extremely racist California "illegals"
thread, wherein most of the posters are outraged at the influx of Mexicans
    into our state.

I've never had the good fortune to visit Hawaii. I've always imagined it to
be one of the most beautiful places in the world. I've read of the big
islands becoming extremely commercialized, with huge hotels crowding the
shorelines. I've read that the cand sugar industry is not what it once was,
and that some of the native people of the small islands are now finding
    alternative uses for their property.

Given the rotten treatment over the years of many, many, many brown-skinned
and black-skinned peoples by others of paler, wealthier, more European
backgrounds, I wonder if the haole hating is rooted in a very reasonable
concernthat white people might keep coming in, building lots of tall buildings
and ugly fast-food restaurants, and eventually try to crowd out or dominate
the locals, trash the landscape, gobble up the whole place and ruin it, as has
so wastefully happened in so many other areas of the world.

Apparently there are many white teachers (TEACHERS!) in California who have
the same kinds of fears about Mexicans migrating northward. (I guess white
people forget that the United States is not the center of the universe. To
many Mexicans, "here" is North America, and they feel that they've been "here"
longer than some of the Americans who complain about them.)

But since the outrage among these "teachers" is allegedly about encroachment
by unwelcome newcomers, I wonder how sympathetic they'd truly be with the
native people of Hawaii. Would they equate the fear and disdain toward haole
culture with their own fear and disdain toward Mexican culture, or would they
roll their eyes and complain further about arrogant "brownies" who don't know
    their place in the U.S.?
